Warm yourself up with good camaraderie and subject matter! In this 6 week foundation oil painting class, learn about methods and practices while capturing your best fur-friend on canvas! This is a great class for any animal lover who enjoys creating art and would like to take their work to the next level! Students will be expertly guided through the process of creating a painting from start to finish with ample, brief demonstrations including how to create your under-drawing, color mixing, initial block out and finishing details. Time allowing, different approaches will be explored.

  • There is a $4 registration fee included in tuition.
  • All members will have the fee deducted from the tuition.
  • There is an $8 materials fee included in tuition to cover demonstrations materials.
  • STUDENT PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING:
  • Palette (could be palette paper)
  • Palette knife
  • Odorless turpenoid (at least 8 ounces)
  • Paint brushes – a mix of flats and rounds in a variety of sizes that you enjoy working with
  • Oil Paints: titanium white, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow (“hue” or “medium” ok) or Lemon Yellow, raw umber, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, viridian, ivory black, cadmium red (“hue” or “medium” ok), alizarin crimson. Link to reasonable starter set: https://www.dickblick.com/items/01557-1039/
  • 2 canvases (stretched or panels): 11x14” or 16x20” (or similar sizes)
  • 2 glass jars with secure lids (such as an empty jam jar)
  • Small tin can (like empty tuna or cat food can)
  • smock or painting clothes to wear
  • Rags (like salvaged old undershirts/t-shirts) & tin can for safe transport (like an empty coffee can)
  • Paper towels
  • 8x10” printed photograph of pet (or use one of the instructors photos)
  • Optional helpful accessories:
  • Medium such as Windsor and newton liquin
  • Color wheel
  • Instructor to provide:
  • demonstration materials & brushes; paper towels; 8x10 pet photos for class use; example works for discussion and inspiration.

Award winning New England artist, ShawnaLee W. Kwashnak, loves animals, a warm cup of coffee, and bringing joy to others by creating Portraits of pets and people. With attention to detail, ShawnaLee strives to capture the spirit of her subjects in every work. Each piece is created entirely by hand in the time honored way using authentic artist materials and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. ShawnaLee is a Cum Laude graduate from Western Connecticut State University with a BA in Studio Art and Graphic design/Illustration and has been instructing art for over 28 years. She has served as Youth Art Director and program developer for the Ridgefield Guild of Artists, and taught at many venues as well as privately. She is a current board member of the CT Society of Portrait Artists, a member of SCAN, WAA and also the Richter Association for the arts. Her work has garnered numerous awards including An Award of Excellence from the Richter, Newtown Savings Bank Award from SCAN, recent feature articles in Northeast Equestrian Magazine & Middlebury Magazine as well as the Susan Wakeen Studio Art Award 2019. She is a mother of three, leader of an active Girl Scout Troop and shares her studio space with 4 cats, rabbit, a turtle, and if horses could come inside, the horse too!
