Drawing Fundamentals

Adult | This class is completed

In this six-week drawing class, learn and experience the joy of sketching and drawing!  Learn about the materials and tools for drawing in addition to techniques fundamental to creating more lifelike art.  Students will gain a deeper understanding of studio practices, exercises and drawing skills!  Techniques taught will include hatching, values, blocking, and perspective.  Students of all levels are welcome to join!

Meet Days: 2/7, 2/21, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/28. 

**No Class 2/14 & 3/21

Materials Required for each class:

  1. Graphite Pencils (H, 3B, 5B recommended)
  2. Kneaded eraser
  3. Vinyl eraser
  4. Charcoals (vine & pencils)
  5. Pen & ink / pens
  6. Sketch or drawing paper 11x14, 12x18 and 14x17 are all nice sizes depending on your preference. Recommended paper weight of 80lb and up.
    Toned sketch paper: recommend 11x14” Strathmore 400 series recycled toned sketch paper in Gray or Tan
  7. Nice to have, but not necessary: Table top lamp(s) for single light source study.  

  • There is a $4 registration fee included in tuition.
    All members will have the fee deducted from the tuition.
    A $4.00 materials fee for instructor lesson modeling.

    ** Class size is limited to 8 (Covid 19 vaccinated) students**

     ***Mask Wearing is Optional***

    **This class is held in the Mill Building in the River Room studio which is beneath the Gallery. There will be a set of steps to walk up and down. This studio is not wheelchair accessible.**


    **Please note that classes at Brookfield Craft Center must meet a minimum number of registrations for the class to run. Students will be notified within a week's notice whether their class will be held. If the class is canceled due to low enrollment, students may request to be transferred to another class or be refunded in full.

Award winning New England artist, ShawnaLee W. Kwashnak, loves animals, a warm cup of coffee, and bringing joy to others by creating Portraits of pets and people. With attention to detail, ShawnaLee strives to capture the spirit of her subjects in every work. Each piece is created entirely by hand in the time honored way using authentic artist materials and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. ShawnaLee is a Cum Laude graduate from Western Connecticut State University with a BA in Studio Art and Graphic design/Illustration and has been instructing art for over 28 years. She has served as Youth Art Director and program developer for the Ridgefield Guild of Artists, and taught at many venues as well as privately. She is a current board member of the CT Society of Portrait Artists, a member of SCAN, WAA and also the Richter Association for the arts. Her work has garnered numerous awards including An Award of Excellence from the Richter, Newtown Savings Bank Award from SCAN, recent feature articles in Northeast Equestrian Magazine & Middlebury Magazine as well as the Susan Wakeen Studio Art Award 2019. She is a mother of three, leader of an active Girl Scout Troop and shares her studio space with 4 cats, rabbit, a turtle, and if horses could come inside, the horse too!
