In this class students will learn how to weave a scarf on a rigid heddle loom. We will first choose yarns, then prepare the rigid heddle looms for weaving. Students will then be given instruction on how to use the rigid heddle looms and basic weaving techniques. Students will take the loom home with them during the week to weave at their own pace. We will then reconvene the following week to finish up weaving and to learn how to take the woven piece off of the loom and how to secure the ends and how to wet finish the freshly woven cloth.

  • There is a $4 registration fee included in tuition.
  • Members will have the $4 fee deducted from the tuition.
  • There is a $15.00 materials fee included in the tuition.

  • Students may bring their own rigid heddle loom, purchase one from the instructor or rent ($20) with the option to buy at the end of the workshop.

    **Please note that classes at Brookfield Craft Center must meet a minimum number of registrations for the class to run. Students will be notified within a week's notice whether their class will be held. If the class is canceled due to low enrollment, students may request to be transferred to another class or be refunded in full.

Katie Strano is fiber artist focusing on small scale production weaving, and art pieces for her business, Heddle Over Heels. She has worked with regional farmers to create handwoven pieces using their locally grown wool and fibers. In addition, she offers private weaving lessons and is also the floor loom and rigid heddle weaving instructor at Brookfield Craft Center, in Brookfield, CT.
