Doug Watters
Doug Watters is a furniture-maker and wood artist based in Rye, NY. His focus is designing and building custom furniture, wood sculpture and woodturning. Doug enjoys the “surprise” of natural wood beauty when a board is split open to build furniture or a fallen tree is turned on the lathe. His work emphasizes bringing out the most character and color in the wood he uses. This can include interesting cracks, bark, “curled” grain, burl and other natural features of wood.
Doug began his “second career” working for Robert Martin Designs in New York City designing and building custom furniture. He has also worked as a teaching assistant for Wendy Maruyama, Brian Newell, Mark Gardner, Beth Ireland and several other contemporary furniture-making and woodturning masters. Doug has taught Woodturning at SUNY Purchase Arts College and was the Teaching Assistant for the Master Class in Furniture and Applied Design at the college.
