Hollowing at the Lathe - a Five Session Course
Day 1: Theory and Practice: The instructor will explain how hollowing differs from bowl-turning or spindle turning. He will describe the various tools that can be used for hollowing and demonstrate the proper, safe way to use each tool. The students will then practice on scrap wood with each tool.
Day 2: Make a Small Lidded Box: The students’ first project will be making a small lidded box, following a pattern provided by the instructor. They will use spindle gouges, scrapers, or both to shape the box and create a tight-fitting lid.
Day 3: Make a Vase: The students will take a piece of hardwood and transform it into a vase for dried flowers, using straight and bent hollowing tools to shape the inside and a spindle gouge or skew to shape the
outside. They will follow the pattern provided by the instructor.
Day 4 & 5: Make a Large Segmented Vessel: The instructor will prepare a blank consisting of various hardwoods that have been glued together. The students will spend two evenings shaping and finishing it, following the instructor’s pattern and using a range of turning and hollowing tools.
