Introduction to Marash: Armenian Interlaced Embroidery

Adult | Unavailable

Marash embroidery is an traditional interlacing technique that references ancient Armenian craft
practices including stone and wood carving. The intricate, geometric patterns are also
reminiscent of knot and textile forms seen in carpet designs and even illuminated manuscripts.
For this workshop, the focus will be the interlaced stitch pattern that is made with a base of
herringbone stitches that have two rows of thread interwoven around them to create an elaborate
pattern. The technique requires stitches to be prepared in a specific sequence for the interlaced
pattern to be legible. This is a great embroidery technique for people who enjoy puzzles and
problem solving. With more practice, you will be able to plan ahead for the types of structures
you want to create and develop more elaborate images.
While any embroidery experience will be helpful, no previous experience is necessary to get
started. Participants can expect to create a sampler using the basic Marash embroidery stitches
before making plans for their own patterns. Beginners will be encouraged to combine bright,
contrasting colors so the pattern can be easily seen and reproduced.
