Cradled In Style: Sophisticated Step Bezels and Elegant Basket Settings

 Cradled in Style: Sophisticated Step Bezels and Elegant Basket Settings.  A 2-Day Stone Settings Workshop

On day one, students will construct step bezels for either cabochon or faceted stones,

and learn additive and subtractive modifications to provide unique depth and variety beyond more

traditional settings.

On day two, students will modify their own pair of cross-locking tweezers and use

them to create wire basket settings (also known as prong settings) for a round or oval faceted

gemstone. Students can expect to come away with two stone settings or more for use on a future

project.

Skills Required: Intermediate and above – strong solder control, filing, and finishing skills needed.

(Advanced beginners who have strong torch control may be permitted to join after discussion with

instructor.)

    There is a $4 registration fee included in tuition.
    Members will have the $4 deducted from tuition.
    There is a $104.00 material and consumable fee included in tuition.

     Approximate materials cost as of 1/25: $90.00,  Please be aware there may be a slight increase in materials cost depending on Market Values.  All students would be informed of any increase by 3/23/25 .

    This class is held in the Jewelry Studio which is beneath the Gallery.
    There will be a set of steps to walk down.

    Please note that classes at Brookfield Craft Center must meet a minimum number of  4  registrations for the class to run. Students will be notified within a week's notice whether their class will be held. If the class is canceled due to low enrollment, students may request to be transferred to another class or be refunded in full.

    6” - Decorative Gallery Wire

    Take-home Tool: Cross Lock Tweezer

    NOTES: Students are encouraged to bring additional faceted or cabochon stones and/or favorite gallery wire for use and design discussions. Additional materials may be available for purchase from the instructor day-of.

Rachel Morris – Artist, Educator, and Consultant

Rachel Morris is a Portland, Oregon-based metalsmith and educator whose jewelry marries structural and organic forms, drawing inspiration from architecture and the natural world. She owns Eclectic Nature Jewelry & Design, crafting one-of-a-kind pieces in sterling silver, gold, gemstones, and pearls. Her work has been featured at craft shows and galleries around the country. Rachel holds a Master of Arts in Teaching and has been in arts education for more than 30 years. On the east coast, Rachel has taught metalsmithing at esteemed institutions including Brookfield Craft Center, Silvermine Arts Center, and Metalwerx. Her favorite workshops involve hollow forms, clasp making, and innovative stone settings, with classes both in person and online. She is passionate about fostering creativity in her students and is always pleased to return to Brookfield Craft Center where her metals teaching career began.
