A beginner's introduction to pottery. Learn wheel throwing and/or hand building techniques to take fresh clay to a finished product. You'll learn all the steps of the pottery process from forming to finishing and pick up your pieces of art after the final firing.

Students can expect to learn forming techniques (wedging, wheel throwing, sculpture, slab building, coil pots) and finishing techniques (trimming, altering, glazing, sqraffito, underglazing)

Please come "studio ready" -- leave all rings, bracelets, watches etc. at home.

All ceramic work fired in our Electric kilns is subject to a firing fee of 5 cents per cubic inch.
Firing Fee Forms will be given out the first day of class and picked up the last day of class.
Firing Fees will be calculated at the end of the class.

***New Clay Policy*** Please See Below***

  • There is a $4 registration fee included in tuition.

Members will have the $4 fee deducted from the tuition.
A studio materials fee of $2.00 is included in the tuition.

    ***New Clay Policy***

In an effort to be more economical and resourceful in our Ceramic Studio, we encourage our returning students to use their remaining clay from previous classes, and then to purchase their choice of new or reclaimed clay at the time of registration.

New students MUST purchase a new bag of clay at the time of registration.

New Clay: This is fresh, moist white clay with grog from Sheffield Pottery, Sheffield MA

Reclaimed Clay: This is the same white clay but processed through the studio's pug mill. The pug mill removes air bubbles and mixes and extrudes leftover clay from previous classes. The resulting clay is of a smooth, workable consistency excellent for all projects.

**Please note that this class at Brookfield Craft Center must meet a minimum number of 3 registrations for the class to run. Students will be notified within a week's notice whether their class will be held. If the class is canceled due to low enrollment, students may request to be transferred to another class or be refunded in full.

Artman, Heather
Heather Artman

Hi, I’m Heather! I fell in love with pottery in 2015 when I took a class at a studio in Colchester
CT. I was looking for a hobby to try after work but I never expected it to lead me where I am
today. After about a year of classes, I decided to invest in a home studio and slowly started to
accumulate equipment and supplies. I continued to take classes at my local community college
and new studios after moving to new areas. I’ve always loved learning different techniques from
new people and I truly believe that pottery is a practice that is always changing with the potter.
Now, 9 years later, I have a fully functional home studio and it has truly become my passion to
create all types of ceramic work. I’ve had the opportunity over the years to teach the art to kids
and adults and have discovered that I love being able to inspire others to explore their artistic
side. I also enjoy selling my work at local markets and on Etsy. I have dabbled in sculpture and
hand building techniques but I’m most comfortable on the wheel.
Nothing brings me more peace than time spent creating and nothing brings me more joy than
sharing my knowledge and my creations with those around me.
