Woodturning Open Studio

Open Studio | Available

Work independently on woodturning projects in our Turning Center at any scheduled open studio.

Bring your creativity and your own wood to the Turning Center. BCC will supply the lathes and tools. An experienced turner will be on hand to help with technique and answer questions.

Open Studios are available to students who have taken a class with BCC in the past 18 months and/or BCC members who have achieved an appropriate skill level to work independently. Please purchase this session online ahead of time to reserve a spot.

Please note: There are a set of steps for the Woodturning studio. This studio is not handicap accessible.

Reminder:
Open Studio attendees are responsible for bringing their own wood, cut to the size they would like to turn.

Swyers, Julia
Julia Swyers

I first learned about wood turning while taking a general carpentry class at a local college.  I had recently moved into a new house and wanted to make furniture for my home.  Once in the woodshop, I was drawn to the row of lathes at the back of the room with all the turning tools lining the wall. Here and there were the practice pieces left by other students featuring glue ups of exotic woods, broken bowls or half-done candlesticks. I was intrigued by the handheld scale and tactical quality of what could be made on a lathe. I soon enrolled in workshops learning bowl making and spindle turning, eventually setting up my own shop at home. I like to make functional pieces to warm the home.
