Forged Tong Making

Adult | Available

This two day class will open the doors to better material holding and start you on the path to making specialty tongs. In this class, we will forge and complete one set of V-jaw bolt tongs capable of handling between ¾” and ¼” stock. We will learn to punch and drift for the rivets then form a rivet and set it. We will be using the hydraulic press to draw out reins and jaws and will be using top and bottom tools and bending jigs to form the jaws. At the end of this course, students will have a functioning set of tongs and the knowledge to create other specialty tongs.

  • There is a $4 registration fee included in tuition.

Members will have the $4 fee deducted from the tuition.

Knapp, Ted
Ted Knapp

Ted Knapp started bladesmithing and blacksmithing about 7 years ago and was immediately hooked. Since then he has refined his skills by taking classes at the Good Forge, attending blacksmithing meets and spending countless hours in his own forge, Owl Ridge Forge.

Ted is a carpentry craftsman by trade and called upon those skills to start designing and creating his own forging tools. Being drawn toward producing utilitarian objects, Ted has made tongs for his own use as well as tongs for the Good Forge.

Ted is looking forward to encouraging students to advance their skills in tool making to help their craft.
