Ink, graphite, charcoal, action…join us as we practice observing and drawing the world around us! Observation is the first step into the skill of drawing, and necessary to maintaining the same. Anybody, regardless of background or experience can attain proficiency though developing a few simple skills. Join us weekly, as we fuse left and right brain in drawing challenges from life and still life.

  • Please prepare the following materials (in addition to any other preferred mediums):
  • One mixed media (wet and dry media) sketchbook
  • Drawing paper (up to 18x24”), drawing board and clips
  • Choice of conte, compressed charcoal, vine/willow charcoal
  • Several grease pencils/China markers
  • One pencil sharpener/knife
  • An eraser (kneaded for charcoal, pink/white for pencil)
  • Selection of pens
  • Selection of pencils 2B/4B/6B/8B
  • ink (sumi, india, etc.) and choice of pen or brush

Adrian Johnston was born in Tennessee. From the age of six, he trained internationally as a gymnast. He received a BFA in Drawing and Painting at the University of Iowa, and continued on to study and teach in Guizhou University College of Art. Books, dance, design, drawing, illustration, mission, mixed media, murals, music, painting, performing, recording, sound, teaching, traveling have lead to Boston, where Adrian lives and works with his wife and two children.
