336 - The Diversity of Soft Pastels

Expand your knowledge of soft pastels with alternating individual instruction from two master pastelists. Beginners will be introduced to the basics of the medium, while more advanced students will build upon existing skills. Everyone will have the opportunity to explore different surface colors and textures, refine compositions with small studies, and work from still-life setups in class. There will be demonstrations, critiques, and discussions.
Previous drawing experience recommended.
Beginner Students- Foamboards (20 x 30 inches is a good size. 2 recommended )
- Clamps - to hold board to easel
- Sketchbook
- Soft lead pencils
- Vine charcoal (soft or medium)
- Kneaded eraser
- White vinyl eraser
- Paper towels (V'rva works best)
- Masking tape neutral or black
- Sanded pastel paper (UART 400 grit is recommended. 400 grit sandpaper is good starter)
- Pastels (Bring any you might have already to the first class. Otherwise instructor can provide some for the first day and will discuss materials in class.)
- Feel free to bring in examples of your work (in any medium) to class and anyreference photos you would like to work from.
Experienced Students
- Soft pastels
- Pastel surfaces you are comfortable working on.
- Clamps
- A Sketchbook
- Printed photo references to work from.
- Photos of your work and one or two originals.
