This 2 week workshop is an introduction to landscape painting from photographs in gouache. Gouache is a friendly, forgiving and fun medium that is essentially an opaque form of watercolor. Gouache is used more thickly than watercolor and its opaque nature allows for painting lighter colors over darker colors — like oil. Gouache thins and cleans up with water. The workshop will also include instruction in mixing a wide range of colors from a limited palette.

  • Reference photos will be provided for the workshop.

    Students should bring:
    • short handle brushes suitable for acrylic or mixed media, ½” and ¼” flat wash, #4 or #6 round, ideally 2 of each for light and dark colors.
    • watercolor palette with generous mixing area
    • 140lb (300gsm) watercolor or mixed media paper, hot or cold press, 6x9” or 8x10” or similar.
    • Water containers, small for clean water, larger for brush cleaning.
    • Pencil for sketch.
