This is a course in landscape painting in gouache, using photographs as a reference. The class will include instruction in blocking your painting, painting gouache in layers, adding details, techniques for indicating foliage and other textures. You will also learn how to mix a wide range of colors from a limited palette. The class will include demonstrations by the instructor and individual instruction based on each student’s level of accomplishment.

  • Gouach paint and reference photos will be provided for the class.

    Students should bring:
    • short handle brushes suitable for acrylic or mixed media, ½” and ¼” flat wash, #4 or #6 round, ideally 2 of each for light and dark colors. 
    • watercolor palette with generous mixing area 
    • 140lb (300gsm) watercolor or mixed media paper, hot or cold press, 8x10” or  9x12" or similar. 
    • Water containers, small for clean water, larger for brush cleaning. 
    • Pencil for sketching.

Charley Parker studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. For the past several years he has been teaching at the Delaware Art Museum, the Delaware College of Art and Design and Jester Artspace.
